Samuel Ranelluci, Unbound’s Chief Scientist, had the opportunity to attend and speak at the NIST Threshold Cryptography Workshop this year.
What is threshold cryptography? In a nutshell, threshold cryptography involves having multiple parties run a computation over private data to generate a public output without leaking the private data. Threshold cryptography includes things such as secret sharing and threshold signing.
Sam’s panel included discussions about:
- Should NIST first standardize big protocols, or standardize the smaller protocols that make up the bigger protocols?
- The purpose of standardization is to enable designers of systems to implement protocols more robustly and efficiently.
- Enabling higher-level and simplifying processes of acquiring FIPS certification for threshold cryptography.
